Hair Problem: How to deal with dry Hair

Tuesday, 20 October 2015  |

Dry hair is a common problem for several hair types and is caused by a variety of factors.

Environmental damage, using the wrong styling products or shampoos plus overdoing the use of heat appliances such as hairdryers or straightening irons can all have a detrimental effect on your hair. Too much time in the sun, swimming in saltwater pools or using too many chemical treatments are other major causes of dry hair. Even something as simple as central heating can slowly dry out your hair, especially in the winter months.

You’ll normally notice dry hair from a variety of signals such as a dull colour, brittle strands, breakage and frizzy locks that are hard to work with.

Once you’ve realised the problem, there are several treatments you can use to help your hair recover. Moisture-enriching hair products are a good starting point in the quest to transform dry locks into silky smooth hair that looks and feels great.

We recommend Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Seasilk Moisture shampoo, a product designed to hydrate while helping to protect against further damage. The anti-aging ingredients and sulphate free formula, revitalize your hair making it easier to work with and style.

Simply add a small amount to hands and apply to your hair before rinsing thoroughly.

Complementing a moisturising shampoo with an ultra-hydrating conditioner is another important step in repairing dry hair. Our favourites include Alfaparf Moisture Mask and Joico Moisture Recovery Conditioner.

Other measures to help cure dry hair can include trimming the ends regularly or using a hair treatment mask like the evo the great hydrator moisture mask with natural ingredients such as palm oil.

Remember to keep the use of heat to a minimum and especially avoid using hot straighteners on damp or wet hair as this strips more moisture from your strands and leaves your hair in worse condition. When you must use heat styling tools ensure your hair is completely dry before getting to work.and using a heat protector can help to protect your hair from the harshest temperatures. In the salon we use Cloud Nine Magical Potion before drying the hair, as it protects the hair from the heat of the hairdryer, as well as the styling irons or tongs. If the hair is especially damaged we also use Alterna Caviar Perfect Iron Spray while smoothing.
